Authors & Marketers: Interviews – The 5 Most Asked Questions Answered

Posted by Jo-Anne Vandermeulen on June 21, 2010

"Combine Authorship with Marketing"

Throughout the year, I have had many opportunities to submit and host interviews. Some have been author focused…others have been market focused…and yet, my favourite is a blend. Perhaps it’s time not to consider both as separate.

Wouldn’t your life be a lot easier if you combined yourself as both an author and marketer?

Here are the top 5 most asked questions:

1.) When should I start marketing?

Building an author platform begins even before the book is released. John Kramar states that a blog should begin as soon as you come up with the idea or know what your book will be about.

2.) I love to write, but I don’t even know where to start. What do I do first?

Whether you are an aspiring author or published, I always give the same advice…start a blog. A website is good, but do you have a place where your followers can interact with you? Think of today’s marketing as more personal…mix formality with conversational writing.

“The best marketing is not selfish. It never has been. It’s caring. It’s understanding your customer or audience and giving them what they want. The best marketing is careful and detailed. The best marketing is personal.” >Carolyn Howard-Johnson – The Frugal Book Promoter and The Frugal Editor!<

A blog is a great place to share your writing. Fellow writers will help you. They will encourage you to continue. Even readers will stop by and read. This will be the start to your following.

3.) I’ve got a blog but there’s no one reading it. What do I do to get noticed?

Be proactive – reach out to many social media sites where your audience will be. Post snippets, answer questions, and participate. This will draw attention. Don’t forget to leave your signature with your blog link included.

“Exposure is king. All marketing efforts on and offline should lead people to your blog. If they like what they see, they will buy your book. The blog gives you an opportunity to expose readers to your writing. Your blog gives you the opportunity to publish content to keep your readers interested in what you have to say. The goal is to develop a following that can’t wait to see what you are going to write about. When you release your book, or your next book, you have a built in customer base.” >Todd Rutherford – the “Publishing Guru”, Todd Rutherford, VP of Yorkshire Publishing<

4.) Is there a formula or something I can follow to make sure my blog is what it takes to sell my book?

Check out other bloggers who have high traffic. What makes their blogs successful? And if you’re wanting to sell your book, here’s a short checklist that you can use:

Vital Checklist for Your Blog:

_____ – my book cover is visible even before the reader scrolls.

_____ – there’s a purchase button (preferably embedded in the book cover) or directly under the book.

_____ – there’s a tab or button where readers can click and directly connect with me.

_____ – if given a brief personal bio of myself and I have my full name included.

_____ – the link to the purchase button goes directly to the purchase page.

_____ – a tab indicates more information about the book (brief synopsis, reviews)

_____ – posts include valuable information for my audience and will be an awesome sample of my voice.

5.) How do you do it all? Being an author is one thing, but now I have to market?

Combine authorship with marketing. Sort of like the saying goes, ‘kill 2 birds with 1 stone’. Use your blog as a place to write and market. Learn short-cuts by following the advice of experts. There are many of us out there who are so happy to help and give tips. Do a search and follow these experts. They will save you tons of time and energy. (pssst…I’ve quoted a few above…oh, and then there’s myself…and don’t forget Tony Eldridge).

Oh, and if you want the easy way out…(here’s the plug…lol)…order my book, “Premium Promotional Tips for Writers”. The many many amazing 5-star Amazon reviews don’t lie. There have been others like you who’ve appreciated the much needed advice.

Remember, on the Internet, you’re never alone. You can *conquer all obstacles*.

The 12-Steps to Author Anonymous

Posted by Jo-Anne Vandermeulen on May 27, 2010

Jo-Anne & Brenda (Youngest Daughter)

By: Jo-Anne Vandermeulen

Have you ever grumbled about marketing, been disappointed in your book-sales, and wanted to give-up as a writer?

Welcome to AUTHOR ANONYMOUS! (Kind of ‘punny’)

The AA Preamble

AUTHORS ANONYMOUS is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from promotional endeavours. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop the negative thinking. There are no dues or fees for A.A. membership; we are self-supporting through our own contributions. A.A. is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution; does not wish to engage in any controversy; neither endorses nor opposes any causes. Our primary purpose is to stay writing and help other writers to achieve sales.”

Sometimes it takes hitting the wall before we seek recovery. By following these steps, in all our affairs, there’s hope whether we’re still actively writing or not.

Twelve Steps for Authors:

#1 – We admitted we were powerless over consumers—that our marketing endeavours had become unmanageable.

No matter how much I market, there are no guarantees for the exact number of sales.

*Yet – The more I exposure myself and my books, the greater chance of success and increase book sales.

#2 -  Came to believe that we need help from our fellow writers—so as a team, our marketing plan could restore us to sanity.

Going solo, while marketing on the Internet, exhausts all my energy.

*Yet – Reaching out to other experts in my field or my targeted audience and linking my site, giving guest posts and  accepting interviews will speed the spread of my author platform.

#3 – Made a decision to turn the outcome of our expectations to the published posts  of our blog as we understood it.

Setting myself up for unrealistic expectations leads to only terrible results and even a sense of failure.

*Yet – Planning is okay. So I’ll toss out my fears and post my article…be ready to write, write, and write some more.

#4 -  Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of the Internet resources.

Decide on my area of expertise and hone in on the experts.

*Yet – I’ve given myself permission to roam or ‘surf the net’ for new and other experts.

#5 -  Admitted to my fellow writers, to ourselves, and to our viewers the exact nature of our marketing plans.

Formality and sharing my knowledge is appreciated but may have the viewer searching elsewhere for more entertaining information.

*Yet – I’ve learned that mixing the formality with conversational writing will keep my readers coming back. Showing flaws will portray  realism. I share my true voice.

#6 -  Were entirely ready to have our fans remove all the awful feelings of past rejections.

Reasons why I shut-down and suddenly go into ‘writer’s-block’:

1.)   I focusing on the negative

2.)   My expectations are not being met – Book sales are down

3.)   I dwell on the disappointed outcome

*Yet – Using praise from my fans can bring me up and activate the muse. I can change my attitude and focus. No longer do I care about my book-sales; instead, I really care about my fans and the desire to support my fellow-writers.

#7 -  Humbly asked viewers to keep coming back.

Spam is just wrong.

*Yet – Genuinely giving great content and showing that I need them work to my benefit.

#8 -  Made a list of all promotional tactics we had used, and became willing to make improvements to them all.

Using the successful promotional techniques I used a year ago may not work today. Even yesterday’s tactics may not work anymore.

*Yet – To accept this society as a speed-changing entity will help change the focus off my faults or mishaps and more on the reasons for change.

#9 -  Made direct updates to such marketing tactics, except when to do so would drive us to insanity.

Again, what worked yesterday, may not work today.

*Yet – I can prepare for change. I can be constantly searching out new methods. I work this daily education into my day plan.

#10 -  Continued to take self-evaluation and when we were receiving less hits promptly acknowledged it.

I  see rises and falls…ups and downs.

*Yet – I can prepare for the roller coaster by spreading my abilities or gifts. For example: During a fall on one of my blog post (according to the Google Analytics), I will then enter the social media sites and help a fellow writer with a marketing dilemma.  I cannot expect myself to always rise on a high peak, so when the hits decrease, I have to plan for an alternative means of accomplishment.

#11 – Sought through inspirational experts to improve our marketing plan with our consumers as we understood them, hoping only for knowledge of their purchasing-buttons and the power to carry that out.

Having the author switch roles from an artist to business is quite a feat. Now a writer must be a marketer, a publicist, and quite often the distributor in order to sell books.

*Yet – As authors, we have accepted we have to wear many hats to perform the end-results…sales. The blessing is the Internet—the unbelievable amount of information and experts are now captured with a few clicks on a keyboard.

#12 -  Having had remarkable ideas as the result of these resources, we tried to carry this knowledge to fellow-writers, and to practice these marketing tips in all our affairs.

The bulk of all the information on the Internet can be overwhelming.

*Yet – I do have the ability to scan. I’m literate—a gift to many in this world. I climb higher and sell more books by gathering together with others. Team work is the answer, and there are so many out in cyber-space willing to help.

>Thanks to the original Twelve Steps as published by Alcoholics Anonymous:[10]<

*Keep coming back ‘cause it works if you work it and YOU’RE WORTH IT!*

2010-04-29

So you’ve written your masterpiece. Now what? Sadly that’s where most books about writing leave off. Gladly, that’s pretty much where Jo-Anne Vandermeulen’s Premium Promotional Tips for Writers takes up.

And not just sort of.

Premium Promotional Tips for Writers offers excellent advice that (even after decades in the publishing industry) I’ve never seen anywhere else. Page after page of fantastic ideas. Heck, I found myself not just reading it to review the book, but taking notes so I could apply her secrets to my own career.

This book shows how to promote yourself, build a following, and make it big as an author.  And most of the promotional secrets not only work, but are easy to execute and quite often free.

There are a lot of good books about writing out there; this book belongs at the top of the list ahead of all the others. My advice to any author who has mastered all the basic writing skills and wants to move into top-list professional status: Read this book!

If All Else Fails…LAUGH!

Posted by Jo-Anne Vandermeulen on January 18, 2010

Can YOU relate?

Your content doesn’t have to come across as boring. Writing articles in your blog doesn’t have to be daunting. I’ve already discussed the importance of:

1.)   Sticking with the topic of your niche

2.)   Keeping the format short and sweet

3.)   Mixing the writing style from conversational to formal

4.)   Creating valuable content

Now I need you to think of something funny…

The last time you read something that made you laugh, did you walk away?

One of the most responsive status update on my Facebook homepage was a one-liner, fill-in the blank:

“I know when I’ve been on the Internet too long when I________________.” Here are a few responses:

I know I’ve been on the Internet too long when I:

-          Send an email to myself.

-          Hit cut instead of copy.

- Hitting the REFRESH button, hoping to wake-up. >Thanks to Nancy Williams from Laurus Books<

Please, please add more to this post if you can help me…:).

I wish I would have copied and pasted the responses (my memory isn’t great) because they were hilarious! I laughed so hard I had a side-pain. (Now I know, I have to remember to capture those funny moments and share with others more often.)

There’s nothing better than a good laugh. Unfortunately, I’m not one whom delivers the jokes…yet, I do like to be involved with the responsive chuckles. If I was…I’d be incorporating at least one funny moment per post.

In my opinion, writing humour is a gift. I envy all who can deliver content in a funny fashion. What a fabulous way to hook the viewer and keep them within the post or article.

So if you are one who can get people to laugh, even if you have an inkling in ‘being funny’, I encourage you to use it!

If you’re more like me, who has problems remembering jokes and one-liners to incorporate into the odd post, (as a crutch) use the tools we have. It’s okay to open a file and paste what we’ve saved or using a quote with recognition.

“Stopping a piece of work just because it’s hard, either emotionally or imaginatively, is a bad idea. Sometimes you have to go on when you don’t feel like it, and sometimes you’re doing good work when it feels like all you’re managing is to shovel shit from a sitting position.” >Stephen King<

How about selecting a photo that made the corners of your mouth turn up? Did you giggle when you saw what I really look like when I’ve been on the Internet too long? Even tossing in the odd acronym ( …lol) or funny face (…:)) can add a light touch to your article.

You can *conquer all obstacles* and adding humour into our posts by using the tools we have available and adding in that touch of imagination. Relax and enjoy the process…:).

“Read It, Read It, Read All About It”

Posted by Jo-Anne Vandermeulen on May 26, 2009

newspaper boy

Now you get to be a fly on the wall.

Who’s wall?

Everyone’s wall who’s talking about you.

How?

Sign up for these two alerts and fill in key words. So simple and cool. Automatically, these alerts will provide you with who’s talking about you or your books.

Why is this important?

> This information will tell you whether or not your webcrawlers are working and you’ve chosen wise tags (key words). If the alerts are sending you your own pages that you’ve social bookmarked (added to Delicious, Digg, Bookmarks, Stumble, etc.), it means you’re doing a great job with your internal links.

I’ve been a guest blogger on some other sites and the alerts have sent me this person’s site with my name quoted. I can then send this information back to the presenter and let them know that their internal links are active. Chances are, they are ranking high in the search engines. (The higher ranking in the search engines, the greater the chances your potential customers are going to find you and your books – the greater chances you will be to successfully sell your books).

> Alerts has sent me quotes of mine that I’ve caught others using. Call it stealing or infringing on copyrights, it is wrong. Others should never take words (claiming them as their own) from someone else without making proper reference. GRRrrrrr!

> I use Alerts to prove how affective my promotional/marketing techniques are working. When I’m promoting, my plan is to create massive exposure of the author and their book(s). So if  I’m the author, every day I expect Alerts to pick up ‘Jo-Anne Vandermeulen’, ‘Conquer All Obstacles’, and ‘Premium Promotional Services’. If I don’t see the Alerts picking up my tags then I know I’m not doing my job. I need to reactivate my internal links and social bookmark my pages. This is why linking blogs with other active bloggers is a great idea. When they social bookmark their page, your tags will automatically be marked and sent to Alerts. A double win.

wake up Do you keep quotes stickied to your bathroom mirror? Okay, how about around your toilet? In your car? I can practically hear some of you chuckling and see you nodding your heads. See, you haven’t lost your mind…there are others just like you…lol.

There comes a time when I’m feeling down, I need a few reminders. So, I cannot come up with the positives in my brain…I rely on the positive message scrawled on my sticky notes.

Here are some of my favorites:

Where one door closes, another one opens.

Go with the flow.

Keep your eyes open for the unexpected. Don’t be afraid. Seize the opportunities before you.

You have your own answers within you.

“Everybody is talented, original and has something important to say.” >Brenda  Ueland<

“Imagination is the Divine Body in every Man” >William  Blake<

“Be careless, reckless! Be a lion, be a pirate, when you write. Why you are not to be discouraged, annihilated, by rejection slips.” >William Blake<

There are millions of slogans we can use to pull us up from the dark hole, bring us out of that nasty writer’s block, and pick us up off the ground.

Have you got a favorite slogan that works for you? Care to share so we can form a list…?

Sometimes, it’s just great to know we are not alone. It’s okay to have a bad day every now and then. Have you ever caught yourself staring at an empty screen and your mind is completely blank? The creativity isn’t there or you’re unable to ‘think outside the box’?

Here are a few suggestions from famous people:

“Moving around is good for creativity: the next line of dialogue that you desperately need may well be waiting in the back of the refrigerator or half a mile along your favorite walk.” >Will Shetterly<

“Writing books is the closest men ever come to childbearing.” >Norman Mailer<

Enjoy this week with your writing and remember YOU can*conquer all obstacles*.
